Tax Team (funded by HMRC)

This project has been marketed and developed to target clients in deprived rural communities and for those clients who are disabled or who are living with long term health conditions. We are coaching clients, who have poor access to digital services or lack digital skills, through the HMRC systems to digitally self-serve.  By providing this specialist service on the Isle of Wight we have been able to increase the quality of advice and support available to HMRC clients and enhance the reputation of Citizens Advice IW in the public sector as well as the local community.

We were tasked by HMRC to deliver specialist advice on the CJRS (Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme) and the SEISS (Self Employed Income Support Scheme).

The tax team assisted clients in appealing against and reducing incorrectly billed child and working tax credit overpayments and have achieved a 100% success rate in the submission of mandatory and exceptional mandatory reconsiderations along with supporting PAYE and Self-Assessment enquiries and supporting clients by producing appeals against penalties directly to HMRC.

Additionally, we have supported clients by phone, email and face to face to pay the correct amount of tax and avoid penalties.

Our outstanding reputation has led HMRC to give us direct access to their voluntary sector phone lines which means that we are able to help clients resolve issues more quickly and removing the stress of lengthy waits on HMRC phone lines.
